When to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
By Julie James Photography | SOUTH FLORIDA NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER Serving Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach & Miami
Hi there!
Are you wondering when you should start searching for a newborn photographer? You have a nursery to design, a baby shower to plan, a car seat to figure out, and approximately one thousand things on your to-do list. Booking your newborn photos probably feels like something you can handle later, after the baby comes, once you know the exact due date, once life settles.
Here's the truth: newborn sessions are one of the few things on that list that genuinely cannot wait. And booking early? It's actually one of the simplest, most stress-relieving decisions you'll make this whole pregnancy.
Let me tell you why.
The Best Time to Book Is
During Your Second Trimester
Most newborn photographers — myself included — recommend booking your session between 25 and 30 weeks of pregnancy. That might feel early, but there's a real reason for it.
Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first 7 to 14 days of life. Babies in this window are sleepier, more curled, and easier to settle which means more of those peaceful, dreamy images you're imagining. That's a very small window to work with, and availability fills fast.
My Newborn Availability Is
Intentionally Limited
Here's Why:
I made a deliberate choice to keep my newborn calendar limited. I only take a small number of newborn sessions each month so that every family I work with gets my full attention, patience, and presence.
That means my schedule fills up well in advance, often months before those due dates arrive.
If you wait until after your baby is born to reach out, there's a good chance I won't have an opening during that golden first-two-week window. And scrambling to find a photographer in those early postpartum days when you're exhausted, recovering, and falling in love with a brand new person is the last thing you need.
Booking early takes this completely off your plate.
Early Booking Gives Us Time to
Actually Plan Your Session
When you book in advance, we're not rushing. We have time to connect before your baby arrives to talk through your vision, your style, your must-have shots. We can go over outfit ideas, color palettes, and any props or heirloom pieces you want to incorporate.
This is one of my favorite parts of the process. The more we talk beforehand, the more your session feels like you and not just a generic newborn gallery.
You'll Receive My Newborn Prep Guide
Every client receives my detailed Newborn Prep Guide well before their session date. It covers everything from how to feed and wake your baby before we start, to what to wear, what to bring, and how to set yourselves up for the smoothest possible morning.
A prepared family makes an enormous difference. When parents feel calm and confident walking in, babies feel it too. Sessions flow better, babies settle faster, and we get more of the images you came for.
You can't absorb all of that information in the 48 hours after your baby arrives. Booking early gives you the time to actually read it, ask questions, and feel truly ready.
Bundle Your Maternity Session & Save!
Here's something worth knowing: I offer a Maternity & Newborn Bundle that gives you a discount when you book both sessions together.
But honestly, the discount is almost secondary to what you actually get out of it.
There's something really special about working with the same photographer twice. By the time your newborn session rolls around, we're not strangers. We've already spent time together! I know how you like to be directed, what makes you laugh, what you're hoping to feel when you look back at these images. You've had a chance to get comfortable with me, and that comfort shows up in your photos in a way that's hard to manufacture.
Walking into your newborn session already knowing and trusting your photographer? That ease is everything, especially in those tender, exhausted, emotional early days.
It's a beautiful way to document the full arc; your bump, your anticipation, and then that tiny new face. And practically speaking, it's one less thing to coordinate after the baby comes.
If you're considering maternity photos at all, bundling is the smartest way to do it.
The Short Answer
Book your newborn session during your second trimester around 25 to 30 weeks. It secures your spot during that fleeting newborn window, gives us time to plan a session that's truly personal, and means you'll walk into those first postpartum days with one less thing to worry about.
That's a gift worth giving yourself.
