When to Book Your Maternity Session

By Julie James | Palm Beach Maternity & Newborn Photographer

So you are pregnant, you are glowing, and somewhere between the nursery planning and the baby shower you thought — I NEED to document this. And you are so right! Your bump is one of the most beautiful and fleeting things you will ever experience, and maternity photos are how you make sure you never forget what it felt like to carry your baby.

But here comes the question I get asked all the time: when exactly should I book my maternity session?

Let me break it all down for you so you can plan with confidence.

The sweet spot

For most mamas, 28 to 32 weeks is the ideal window for maternity photos.

Here is why this range is so magical. Your bump is beautifully round and prominent, you are still feeling relatively comfortable and mobile, and your energy is usually at a great place before the final stretch of pregnancy sets in. This is when you look and feel your most radiant and it shows in every single image.

At this stage your belly has that gorgeous full shape that photographs beautifully, your face still has that pregnancy glow, and you have enough flexibility to move freely and try different poses without too much discomfort. It really is the sweet spot.

Every pregnancy is different

One thing that is so important to keep in mind is that every pregnancy and every body is unique. If this is your second, third, or fourth baby, there is a really good chance you will start showing earlier than you did the first time around. With subsequent pregnancies your body already knows what to do and your uterus expands more quickly, which means your bump may be beautifully prominent much earlier than 28 weeks.

If that is the case for you, do not feel like you have to wait. Reach out early and we can talk through the best timing for your specific pregnancy. I would rather capture you a little earlier than miss the window entirely.

Please do not wait too long!

This is the part I really want every mama to hear, and I am speaking from personal experience. I was hospitalized around 33 weeks and completely missed my own maternity session. I know firsthand how quickly things can change and how heartbreaking it is to miss that window. Babies have their own timeline and they do not always wait for yours. They can and do arrive early, and once your little one is here the maternity moment has passed. I always recommend booking and scheduling your session earlier than you think you need to so that we have a date locked in and a backup plan if anything shifts.

Beyond timing, waiting too long into your third trimester can also mean more swelling in your face, hands, and feet which can affect how you feel about your photos. You may also find that outfits that fit beautifully at 30 weeks feel tight or uncomfortable at 37 weeks, and putting together a styling look becomes much more challenging. The last thing I want is for you to feel stressed about finding something to wear days before your session.

Booking early also gives you plenty of time to receive your styling guide, put together your outfits, and feel completely prepared and excited going into your session.

When to Book Your Session

My recommendation is to reach out and book your session as early as possible, ideally in your first or second trimester. This locks in your date, gives us plenty of time to plan, and takes one big thing completely off your plate so you can focus on enjoying your pregnancy.

Spots fill up quickly, especially during peak maternity season, so do not wait until you are in the third trimester to reach out. The earlier the better.
