The Best Time for a Newborn Session in Palm Beach
By Julie James Photography | SOUTH FLORIDA NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER Serving Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach & Miami
Oh baby!
If you're expecting and wondering about the best time for a newborn session in Palm Beach, I am so glad you found this post, because this is genuinely one of the questions I get asked the most!
Here's the thing nobody really tells you before you have a baby. Those first couple of weeks are a total blur. You're running on no sleep, you're falling in love in a way you didn't know was possible, and time somehow moves both painfully slow and impossibly fast all at once. Getting the timing of your newborn session right is truly the difference between capturing those soft, sleepy, curled up newborn images you've been dreaming about, and looking back later wishing you had known sooner. So let's talk it through, mom to mom, so you feel confident and ready.
The Sweet Spot
Okay, so let's get into the actual timing, because I know that's what you really want to know.
For studio sessions, the ideal window is 7 to 12 days after birth. For in home sessions, I usually recommend the 2 week mark. And there's a real reason behind both of these windows, not just a random rule I made up.
In those very first days, your baby is still deep in what I like to think of as their sleepy little newborn bubble. They curl up so naturally into those soft, tucked poses you see and instantly fall in love with. They sleep more deeply, they settle more easily, and honestly, they're just a little more cooperative. This matters especially for studio sessions, where those organic curled up poses really do depend on a baby who's calm and flexible enough to be gently guided into position.
Once you hit that two week mark, babies start becoming more alert and aware of the world around them, which is so beautiful in its own way, but it also means posing gets a little trickier. This is also around the time newborn acne or colic can start to show up. Both are completely normal, so please don't worry if that's you, it just might make a session feel a touch less predictable. None of this means anything is wrong with your baby. It just means they're growing exactly like they should, and that extra sleepy, extra soft window is a short and precious one.
What If More Time Has Passed?
Now, if you're reading this and your baby is already a few weeks or even months old, take a deep breath, mama, because you have not missed your chance.
Life so rarely follows the neat little timeline we imagine while we're pregnant, does it? Sometimes you just need more time before you feel ready to be in front of a camera or to have a photographer in your space. Sometimes there's an unexpected NICU stay you never saw coming. Sometimes a birth recovery takes so much longer than anyone prepared you for. I have walked alongside families through every single one of these situations, and I promise you, from the bottom of my heart, beautiful newborn and baby photos are still absolutely possible.
Once your baby is older than 2 to 3 weeks, we simply shift the approach rather than lose any of the magic. We trade swaddles for sweet knitted outfits, and instead of traditional baby posing, we let parents hold and interact naturally with baby while I capture those genuine, in the moment connections. The older your baby is, the more we lean into this newborn lifestyle approach, focusing on real interactions and tender moments.
Your comfort will always come first with me. We will plan your session around exactly how you're feeling and exactly where your baby is developmentally, because there truly is no wrong time to capture this season of your life. There's only the right time for your family, whenever that ends up being.
A Gentle Reminder: Don't Wait Until Baby Arrives To Book Your Newborn Session!
Can I share something I wish every expecting mama knew a little sooner?
So many families wait until baby actually arrives before they even start thinking about booking a newborn session. And I get it completely. In those final weeks of pregnancy, you're nesting, you're nervous, you're excited, and a photo session is probably the last thing on your mind.
But here's the honest truth. By the time your baby is here, you are exhausted in a way you didn't know was possible, you're adjusting to this whole new little person, and you are in full on survival mode. Reaching out to photographers at that point often means hoping, crossing your fingers, that someone still has room during that sweet little newborn window. And Palm Beach newborn sessions tend to fill up fast, so waiting can genuinely mean missing that window altogether.
That's exactly why I always encourage my mamas to reserve their spot during the second or third trimester. Booking early means every detail is already taken care of before your baby ever arrives, right down to outfit styling, so the moment your little one is here, all you have to do is soak in those newborn cuddles and let yourself rest and recover, instead of scrambling to find a photographer. Book your newborn session early, I promise your future self will thank you!
Key Points To Remember
Ideal timing for studio sessions:
7 to 12 days old
Ideal timing for in home sessions: Around 1-2 weeks old
When to reserve: Your second or third trimester
What I help with: Outfit styling and full session planning, so you truly don't have to think about a thing once baby arrives
My Approach
My approach to newborn sessions is simple: no matter the setting, my goal is always to leave you with timeless, connection focused images you'll treasure for years to come.
As a mother baby registered nurse, caring for newborns isn't just my job, it's genuinely something I love. That background shapes every part of how I work with your baby, from how I support their little body to how I read their cues throughout the session. Your baby's safety and comfort will always come first with me, and I want you to feel that from the very first moment we meet.
This work is also personal to me. My own son was born early during lockdown, and I wasn't able to get newborn photos of him during those first precious weeks. I still feel that loss, and it's a big part of why I take this so seriously with every family I work with. I understand exactly how fleeting and important this season is, and I never want another mama to miss capturing it.
For families with a home that has neutral spaces and lots of natural light, I offer in home lifestyle newborn sessions that beautifully include siblings and parents. For those drawn to a bright, airy, minimalistic space, I offer studio newborn sessions in West Palm Beach or North Miami, with studio style bean bag posing for beautiful baby detail shots. These sessions are perfect for babies 14 days or younger, for families wanting organic, baby led posing. I don't use props, styled sets, or backgrounds, just your beautiful baby against timeless cream and white backdrops with natural textures and heirloom pieces, keeping the focus on baby, timeless, and organic.
Every session includes styling for the whole family with shoppable links and a prep guide to help you get your home and baby ready, with tips for a smooth, stress free session.
I'm happy to walk you through both options and help you decide the best fit for your family.
